2009 Meadowlark Acres Gardening Project Agreement

The gardener who takes primary responsibility for the assigned plot must agree to the policies set forth herein. Please read carefully and completely then sign in the presence of a MLA gardening coordinator who will provide you with a copy of this document.

  1. Meadowlark Acres has the duty of enforcing rules and making decisions for the garden. They have the final authority to resolve conflicts, including refusing a plot to a gardener or dismissing a current gardener.

  1. Garden plots will be open approximately Saturday May 15th, (weather permitting). Produce must be harvested and plots cleaned by October 31st, 2009 (closing date) including the removal of everything you brought into the garden.

  1. Individual plots will be approximately 10’x 20’ and 10’x 10’. All plots will be marked by garden coordinators. A donation of $50.00 for 10’x 20’ plots; $25.00 for 10’x 10’ is suggested to support general upkeep and administration. MLA may provide information regarding sponsorship. Previous gardeners can reserve their prior space if done by March 1st, 2010.

  1. Tilling will be done for you prior to the growing season (approximately May 15th).

  1. Park only in designated areas. Use only established paths going to and from your plots.

  1. A creative unique sign is encouraged to identify your plot.

  1. The use of Meadowlark Acres toilet facilities is available.

  1. Please register for the use of picnic sites and or use of additional equipment and facilities during your visit.

  1. All gardeners are responsible for providing their own tools, seeds, and plants. No storage of personal equipment or materials is allowed on the premises.

  1. Do not bring anything that will compromise the safety of the garden. The garden should be a safe place for the community, children, and other gardeners.

  1. No chemical weed killer (herbicides) may be used. Synthetic pesticides are prohibited. Visit the University of Wisconsin-Extension site for more gardening information - http://wihort.uwex.edu/fruitveggies/index.htm.

  1. Plants must be kept within the plot boundaries. Perennials are not allowed. Tall crops (sunflowers, corn, and trellised plants) may be grown, but should not shade another garden plot. Any fencing or structures must be approved by the MLA garden coordinator prior to use. Plastic mulch and fences are not allowed.

  1. Biodegradable mulch such as compost, leaves, and straw are encouraged. Wood chips are not allowed as mulch because of the slow decomposition rate.

  1. Water will be available nearby. You may use your own hose. Hoses are only allowed through designated walk areas. Gardeners must be present when their hose is in use.

  1. Pets are not allowed in the gardens. Children should be restricted to your plot and the common areas of the garden. Teach your children to respect others’ property and to conserve water.

  1. Gardens should look tidy all growing season. Gardeners are responsible for controlling the weeds at the beginning of the and throughout the growing season and preventing them from spreading to other gardens. If your plot is overgrown with weeds, you will receive a warning. After two weeks of no action, your plot may be reposed and reassigned by MLA garden coordinators.

  1. Compost stations will be available for garden plant disposal and community use. All weeds and diseased plants should be disposed of in the designated area. Place no trash in the piles. No kitchen scraps as it may attract animals. A dumpster near the entrance to MLA may be used for non-biodegradable waste generated from your visits. Do not dump waste materials generated elsewhere.

  1. In the fall, before October 31st, remove all non-biodegradable materials that were brought into the garden. If it grew in the garden, it can stay in the garden.

  1. Your volunteer effort is encouraged for upkeep and appearance of the general garden premises.

  1. Meadowlark Acres is not liable for any loss in event of accident, theft, or vandalism.

WARNING:

If MLA garden coordinators notice that the above policies have not been followed, then you will receive a warning letter explaining what problems need to be addressed. If the situation has not been corrected after two weeks, you will forfeit the plot and it may be assigned to a different gardener.

Stealing and vandalism will not be tolerated. Call the Police Department to report theft or vandalism problems. In case of emergency dial 911.
